La Belle Rebel
Anne Mackintosh — often known as “Colonel Anne” — was one of the most formidable women of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Born into the Farquharson clan and married into Clan Mackintosh, she defied expectations and took an active role in supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie. While her husband served with the government forces, Anne raised and led men for the Jacobite cause, earning her nickname through sheer force of will. She is also remembered for her role in the famous Rout of Moy, where a small group of Highlanders outwitted government troops and protected the Prince.
The MacGregor Story
Now this is Highland leadership in its boldest form. Anne Mackintosh didn’t wait to be asked — she stepped forward. In a world where women were expected to stand back, she organised, commanded, and took control when it mattered most. Loyalty, courage, and absolute conviction — she had it in spades.
And then there’s Moy. Outnumbered, under pressure, and facing government troops — and still, they turned them back. Not through brute force, but through nerve, intelligence, and a refusal to yield. That’s Highland thinking. That’s the kind of spirit that changes outcomes.
It’s a story that sits right alongside the great clan histories — standing your ground, backing your people, and never accepting that the odds decide the result. And that’s why her story belongs here. Because this isn’t just about history — it’s about character. The kind that leads from the front, against expectation, and leaves a mark that lasts.
